Cards prepare for Big Ole tournament
Wrestling fans heading to the 44th annual Big Ole tournament on Saturday will have the opportunity to see some of the state’s top ranked individuals and teams in action.
The annual tournament will also be the last one held at Jefferson High School as next season the contest will be held inside the new Alexandria Area High School.
“With the new high school opening next fall the Big Ole tournament will move to a new location, but no doubt the tradition of one of the oldest and toughest tournament in our state will continue on,” head coach Tom Ellison said.
Second ranked Frazee and 12th ranked Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg are the two Class A teams recognized in the state polls heading into this weekend’s competition. Alexandria will also face off with Albany, Morris Area, Minnewaska, Wadena/Deer Creek, Moorhead, Rocori and St. Cloud Apollo in the 10 team competition.
A total of 16 wrestlers from the tournament’s 10 teams are state ranked, including Alexandria’s Trent Piepenburg and Justin Cumberbatch.
