The Alexandria girls’ hockey team lost a heartbreaker on Thursday as Moorhead scored with five seconds left for a 3-2 victory.

The last-second loss was the latest in a season in which head coach Blair Hovel said many of the bounces have not gone in the Cardinals’ favor.

0 Talk about it

“As I’ve been saying all year, the bounces have not been going our way,” Hovel said. “We are hoping they’ll go our way in the playoffs when it really matters.”

The Cardinals felt good about its play in the game after leading 2-1 after two periods. Melissa Drown scored two goals for Alexandria and the team was able to kill off a five-minute major penalty.

Moorhead started the third period with a game tying goal by Tori Davis, and after that, the two teams settled in for a battle. The Spuds’ offensive pressure proved to be too much, however, as Haley Ludwig scored with only five seconds left in the game for a game-winning goal.

ALEXANDRIA 6, SOUTH FARGO/DAVIES 0 The Cardinals rebounded from a tough loss the night before to win a 6-0 game in South Fargo on Friday.

Alexandria wrapped up the season on Monday night with a game versus the St. Cloud Icebreakers. The Section 6A quarterfinals round begins on Saturday.
