Cards earn section victory over Detroit Lakes
The Alexandria girls’ hockey team picked up an important section victory 3-1 against Detroit Lakes at the Runestone Community Center on Thursday.
The Cardinals also dropped a nonconference game to Bemidji on the road Saturday.
Alexandria’s victory over the Lakers helped them remain a perfect 5-0 against Section 6A opponents. Head coach Blair Hovel said the team did not come out with its strongest performance of the season, but the third period effort was enough for them to remain perfect in the section.
“Not a great performance by the girls, but at least they found a way and kept working and eventually pulled off a victory,” Hovel said. “That is very important because it is a section opponent.”
Kaila DeWanz started the Alexandria offense in the third period by scoring at 4:03. After Detroit Lakes’ Hannah Rhodes tied the game at 1-1 in the middle of the period, Melissa Drown took a Taylor Ellingson pass down the ice and scored to give Alexandria a 2-1 lead.
From there the Cardinals were able to hold off the Lakers as Rachel Drew also netted an empty net goal at the end of the game.
Amy Jost picked up the win for the Cardinals by stopping 17 of the 18 Lakers’ shots on goal.
BEMIDJI 3, ALEXANDRIA 1
The Lumberjacks used two first period goals to hold off the Cardinals 3-1 in Bemidji on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals were playing shorthanded in the game with McKenzie Revering out due to a concussion and Sam Klimek out with an illness.
Jordyn Follis and Sylvia Grimm both scored to give the Lumberjacks a 2-0 lead after the first period.
“Two goals in the first period were basically the difference in the game,” Hovel said.
Hanah Hansen scored in the third period to pull the Cardinals within one, but Bemidji’s Savanna Hanson scored an insurance goal for a 3-1 final.
