It was a tough start to the week on the road for the Alexandria girls’ hockey team after losing 2-1 to the St. Cloud Icebreakers and 6-1 to River Lakes in Paynesville.

The Cardinals came out strong against the Icebreakers on Monday and led after the first period thanks to a goal by Mari Wosepka. Alexandria could not hold on to the lead in the third period, however, as St. Cloud’s Samantha Eisenreich and Haley Hjort both scored in the third period for a one-goal victory.

St. Cloud is currently in first place with an 8-0 record in the Central Lakes Conference. The Cardinals felt they played well enough to win minus a few missed opportunities.

“It was a decent game by the girls, just a couple of mental mistakes that led to a couple goals in the third period,” head coach Blair Hovel said. “The Icebreakers are a tough team. Obviously they’re number one in the CLC for a reason.”

The next night the Cardinals were unable to keep up with River Lakes in the 6-1 loss. Taylor Ellingson scored the lone goal for Alexandria in the first period to tie the game at 1-1. But River Lakes scored two more times in the first period and did not look back from there.

Alexandria also switched goalies halfway through the second period, replacing Amy Jost in net with Bailey Serum. Hovel was happy with the play of Serum as she came off the bench and did a good job to control rebounds and focused on keeping pucks out of the net.

“That’s what we need from our goalies and that’s what we need from everybody is mentally focused, physically ready, and ready to play hockey at all times,” Hovel said. “When we get to that stage this Alexandria girls hockey team is going to be tough. We’re going to surprise a lot of teams and we’re going to win games that we shouldn’t be winning.”

The losses dropped the Cardinals to 8-7-1 overall and 4-4 in the CLC. The Cardinals continued a heavy schedule with another road game in Brainerd on Thursday, yesterday, before playing Northern Lakes at the Runestone Community Center on Saturday.
