Alexandria struck first in the game when Hanah Hansen scored two minutes into the game, assisted by Rachel Drew. But River Lakes scored two goals in the first period from Sydney Caron and Sierra Flint to take a 2-1 lead.

After a scoreless second, Bartels’ unassisted goal in the third period tied the game. But Abby Mooney’s overtime goal gave River Lakes a conference victory over the Cardinals.

Alexandria goaltender Amy Jost was given the loss after making 21 saves on 24 shots.

Head coach Blair Hovel, who was coach of River Lakes before taking his current position at Alexandria, knew it was going to be a close game between two teams expected to finish towards the top of the Central Lakes Conference this season.

“I knew it was going to be tough,” he said. “Those girls in the River Lakes locker room were basically talking about this game ever since I decided to come up here and not be down there this year.”
