After starting the Section 8AAA tournament with a 42-26 win over St. Cloud Tech, the Alexandria wrestling team dropped its next match 42-24 to eventual champions Moorhead in the semifinals on Saturday.

Alexandria only won four matches against the Spuds, including a pin by Justin Cumberbatch at 220 pounds. The Cardinals also received major decisions from Dustin Neu at 152 pounds and Blake Olhausen at 138 pounds, and a 1-0 decision from Dylan Kriese at 120 pounds.

Head coach Tom Ellison credited Moorhead for wrestling a strong match, as the Spuds ended up beating Little Falls 34-19 in the section championship. The Spuds’ strength in the upper weights proved to be the difference in the match.

“We were hoping for something to happen and 160 and 195, but both ended up in pins for Moorhead and that was the difference in the match,” head coach Tom Ellison said. “The match was very close up until 160 and we knew we had to have something special happen up top to try and get the win.”

Seven pins helped the Cardinals advance past St. Cloud Tech 42-26 in the section quarterfinals.

Those pins came from Dylan Kriese at 120 pounds, Tryg Burgau at 126 pounds, Trent Piepenburg at 132 pounds, Blake Olhausen at 138 pounds, Mike Schuler at 182 pounds, Justin Cumberbatch at 195 pounds and Dan Oberg at 285 pounds.

The Cardinals are now gearing up for the Section 8AAA individual tournament on February 21 and 22 at Sartell High School.

Ellison expects Piepenburg, Olhausen, Neu and Cumberbatch to be among the wrestlers that should receive a top-two seed to open the tournament and have a good shot of advancing to state.

Ben Bogart, Adam Johnson, Kriese and Mike Schluter also should receive top four seeds and have a chance to qualify for state.

“I like our chances, as all of our guys are wrestling well right now,” Ellison said. “They are healthy and ready to go.”
