Cardinals down Sauk Rapids
A 2-0 victory for the Alexandria baseball team over Sauk Rapids-Rice on Thursday continued a hot start for the Cardinals in conference play this season.
Pitching and defense both contributed to the win as pitcher Blake Stockert had another strong start.
“The Cards were very sharp in the field as we made several great defensive plays in the field, highlighted by plays from both Travis Krueger and Ben Kluver,” head coach Russ Hinrichs said. “Toby Helgeson continues to be solid at first base and Stockert fielded his position on the mound, making several plays on choppers hit back to him.”
Hinrichs was also pleased with the defense of catcher Mitch Thompson, who threw out a runner attempting to steal second base in the top of the sixth inning with two outs. Thompson led the offense by picking up two hits, including a double that drove in the only RBI of the game.
Stockert picked up a complete game victory on the mound, allowing just four hits and recording seven strikeouts.
