Cardinals cruise in two CLC games
The Alexandria girls’ basketball team’s defense took over on Saturday in a 65-17 home win against St. Cloud Apollo after an easy win against Willmar on Thursday.
The Cardinals held the Eagles to just 17 points as it scored 52 points in the first half alone for the conference victory.
“We were locked in as a team, utilizing defensive concentration and energy to frustrate the Eagles the entire game,” head coach Wendy Kohler said. “Efficient, unselfish ball movement led to many nice looks for the Cards and we did a great job of finishing plays.”
Amanda Christianson led the Alexandria offense with 19 points and Macy Hatlestad also scored eight points. As a team, the Cardinals shot 48 percent from the field.
The girls used a balanced attack and its pressure defense to cruise to a 73-42 win over Willmar last Thursday.
The Cardinals had 21 assists to just seven turnovers and had seven players with at least six points. Christianson led the way with 20. Kendall Kohler added 12 points and Brooke Heggie finished with 10 points and six rebounds. Karly Betterman had a nice all-around game with six points, six assists and five rebounds, while Hatlestad added seven assists.
The Cardinals now have a 7-2 record this season, which includes a 5-0 record against Central Lakes Conference opponents.
The schedule is not easy for Alexandria this week as they face off with two solid conference opponents on the road. First the team traveled to Cold Spring on Tuesday, yesterday, to face off with Rocori, which is 4-1 in the CLC this season. Then on Thursday the Cardinals will play an away game against top-ranked Fergus Falls.
