The Alexandria boys’ hockey team has the confidence that it can win games in the final period as long as it’s close, and why not?

The Cardinals have reason to believe that after upping their record to 11-3-1 overall with two wins early this week. They are also 6-1-1 in games decided by two goals or fewer after beating St. Cloud Apollo 3-1 on Monday night. They then turned around and cruised past River Lakes 4-1 on Tuesday night.

Alexandria scored in every period against the Stars as Andy Rentschler got things going with a first-period goal just a minute and a half into the game. Zach Johnson and Alec Wosepka followed with power-play goals in the second period to make it a 3-0 game heading to the third.

River Lakes got one back 30 seconds into that final frame, but Ryan Marciniak put the finishing touches on the win with a goal in the final minute. Christian Reimers got the start in net as he helped the Cardinals improve to 8-0 in CLC play.

Alexandria needed to rally in the third period on Monday night to stay perfect against St. Cloud Apollo. The Cardinals did that, scoring three times in the third after trailing through the first two frames.

Gino Lucia scored for Apollo at 8:59 in the first period to give the Eagles a lead that lasted until the third period. That’s when Parker Revering evened things at one apiece off an assist from Brady Bast at 5:40 in the period. Levi McFarlane then got what proved to be the game-winner less than a minute later before Christian Canavati finished things off with an open-net goal at 16:46.

Sam Goetsch continued to be a wall in net for Alexandria with 33 saves. He lowered his goals against average to 2.09 and upped his save percentage to .912.
