Cardinal boys' golf: Brundell 57th at state
Alexandria junior Nick Brundell battled the nerves of playing in the state tournament for the first time in his career to shoot a two-day score of 161 at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids.
Brundell finished tied for 57th in the Class AAA field. He shot much better on day two, finishing with a 78 last Wednesday after carding an 83 in the opening round.
"As expected, Nick started pretty slow on day one as he worked through his nervousness," head coach Rick Larson said. "Plus, playing at Bunker Hills with its many bunkers and very large, fast greens."
Brundell had 36 putts on day one before bouncing back on Wednesday. He overcame two bogeys on the first two holes and a double bogey on the 18th to shoot 39 on both nines.
"His putting was much better and his demeanor was positive," Larson said. "Except for the lost ball on the 18th, Nick played pretty solid all day. He scrambled on many holes, hitting some impressive shots."
That final round takes him into the off-season with some momentum as he prepared to lead this team again as a senior next spring.
"He now has a taste of what it is like to play under those conditions," Larson said. "Being a junior, hopefully he will get back there next season and play much better."
