The season started off on the right foot for the Cardinals wrestling team on Tuesday with a 39-25 dual match victory against St. Cloud Tech.

0 Talk about it

Trent Piepenburg, Blake Olhausen and Justin Cumberbatch all won by forfeit in a strategy that head coach Tom Ellison said was designed to avoid the Cardinals’ better wrestlers.

But the Cardinals were able to pick up wins by Dustin Neu, Jacob Schiltgen and Shawn Nelson and counter the strategy.

Another Cardinals’ highlight in the match was a defensive pin from Quinton Kluver-Longfellow after fending off an attempt by St. Cloud Tech’s Jeffrey Karros to put him on his back.

“His opponent put forth such an effort to try and get the pin that he placed his back on the mat and Quinton was awarded a defensive pin and the win,” Ellison said.

Jake Neinaber was recognized for battling through his entire match to avoid giving his opponent a major decision and give St. Cloud Tech an extra team point.

“Jake was able to define what it means to be a team wrestler as he was behind the whole match but kept battling in the third period and was able to score two important points late in the third period to take away a major decision,” Ellison said. “Actions like that will help win close duals as we go through our season.”

The Cardinals opened their home season with a 6:15 p.m. match against Sartell-St. Stephen on Thursday. On Saturday they will travel to Litchfield for an invitational tournament beginning at 10 a.m.
