Card volleyball: State-ranked teams hand Alexandria three losses at Apple Valley

It was a tough road trip for the Cardinal volleyball team as they competed in the prestigious 16-team Apple Valley Invitational over the weekend.

Facing top-ranked opponents in all but one of the matches, Alexandria came home with a 1-3 record, defeating Hibbing 22-25, 25-21, 18-16 for their lone victory.

Against the Bluejackets, Samm Trumm pounded down 13 kills, with Allie Noetzelman adding 10 assists and Shanee Herd seven digs.

Brianna Johnson, Cameron Swedberg and Emily Kuennen all had three blocks.

The Cards didn't fare as well against Class AAA's No. 8 Eastview, falling in two sets 25-16, 25-14 as Trumm was kills leader with six, adding five digs. Noetzelman contributed six assists and five digs.

The Cards didn't come out much better against No. 5 ranked Shakopee, falling 25-10, 25-10.

It was Trumm again leading the way, putting down five kills and adding two blocks, with Noetzelman notching five assists.

The Cardinals also ran into South Dakota's third ranked team in Sioux Falls Lincoln, falling 25-16, 25-13 as Trumm had four kills and five digs, with Noetzelman having two assists and five digs. Herd also had five digs.

In all, nine teams had top-10 rankings, with two more receiving votes in the polls.

No. 2 ranked Wayzata won the Apple Valley Invitational, beating top ranked Lakeville North 16-25, 25-22, 15-4.

Alexandria faced off against several state ranked teams at the Apple Valley Invitationa over the weekend. In fact, nine teams are among those in the top 10, with two more receiving votes.
