Card volleyball: CLC dominance continues
The Cardinal volleyball team is halfway to another undefeated Central Lakes Conference season after sweeping St. Cloud Tech on Tuesday night.
Alexandria jumped all over the Tigers from the get-go, winning 25-14, 25-23 and 25-16 for its 40th straight CLC victory. The win was another two-point match for the Cardinals as it's the only time they will face the Tigers this season.
"It was awesome to see the girls come out with energy and ball control right from the start," head coach Becky Schlichting said. "Tech has had some close matches with other strong teams in our conference, so it was nice to get out there and take care of business right away. This was our best ball control match all season, and the results show just how important [that] is."
Alexandria had a lot of players contributing from the back row, which led to some opportunities at the net. Shanee' Herd and Sam Trumm both had double-digit digs, while Rachel Thompson, Lauren Thompson, Danielle Warren and Cameron Swedberg combined for 27 digs. It's that passing that had Schlichting especially pleased after the sweep over Tech.
"Our ability to pass the ball up to our setter more consistently really helped us to earn a more solid win," she said. "Defensive players Shanee' Herd and Danielle Warren put up their best passes yet this season and got great touches on some hard hits. Missy Schroeder, who stepped in to play in game three, also did some of her best work yet this season."
The Cardinal hitters got a lot of kill opportunities as a result of that passing. Trumm had a big night with 18 kills. Laurel Thompson added eight, while Swedberg chipped in with seven. Trumm and Rachel Thompson were a force up front on defense with a combined six blocks between them.
The end result was another CLC sweep by the Cardinals. They moved to 6-0 in league play with the win. They have lost just three games in those six wins.
