The Alexandria tennis team saw the team portion of its season come to an end against a familiar foe in the Section 8AA North subsection tournament on Saturday.

The Cardinals had lost to Bemidji for 11 straight years, and the second-seeded Lumberjacks proved too much again in a tight 4-3 match. The Cardinals got to the semifinals with a 6-1 win over Moorhead in the opening round.

Things went down to the final match against Bemidji. Brittany Holm and Jessica Larson were locked up in a third set at second doubles with the two teams tied at three wins apiece. The Alexandria duo led 3-2 in that decisive set before Claire Baumgartner and Olivia Dickinson rattled off four straight games to secure the win for their team.

The Cardinals were hoping to sweep the doubles lineup and steal one against a strong Bemidji singles lineup. They got that singles win when Carly Snell took down Mackenzie Schultz at fourth singles. It wasn't quite enough as Baumgartner and Dickinson did enough to send their team on to the North finals.

"I am very proud of the way the girls competed," Alexandria head coach Dave Ronning said. "Everywhere I looked, we had girls diving for balls, playing their hearts out. It was a tough loss for the Cardinals, but it is also a match I believe the girls will remember for a long time. We walked out with our heads held high and no regrets."

Alexandria got to that point with the 6-1 win over Moorhead a day earlier. Rebecca Lukes, Tyra Quitmeyer and Snell all had straight set wins in the singles lineup.

The Cardinal doubles lineup followed suit by sweeping the Spuds. Ellie Bergstrand and Kristen Schmidt won 7-5, 6-3 at the first spot, while Holm and Larson and Rachel Sjostrand and Marissa Wheeler took care of business at the second and third spots.

Alexandria will open the singles portion of the tournament on Friday with Lukes and Quitmeyer playing in the singles division. Schmidt and Bergstrand will play at first doubles, while Holm and Larson will battle in the second doubles tournament.

Alexandria finished the team portion of its season with a 15-7 record overall and a third-place finish in the Central Lakes Conference.
