Heading back to the state tournament as a team after a five year absence, the Cardinal boys will be making their 16th appearance at the state next week.

To do so, the Cardinals had to rally back from a fourth place finish on day one

"It was a great day two for the boys, shooting a 310 to combine with their day one score of 313 to come from behind and win the Section 8AAA golf meet," said head coach Rick Larson.

"With three teams ahead of us, we had our work cut out for us. With the pending weather forecast of rain, we know this would be to our advantage as the guys do play well in bad conditions.

"After an hour delay, we got going and it rained hard for the four holes, but the Alexandria players played tough right through it," he added. "The sign of a good team is to play in all conditions well, and the Cards did just that.

"It was impressive to watch as three players scored in the 70s, which was much better than any other team."

Senior Nick Brundell was the first of those players in the 70s, adding a 76 to his day one 70 and finish in a tie for medalist at 146 with Willmar's Tony Kallevig.

"Nick had his usual game in scoring his 76," said Larson. "Brady Hafdal came to life and held it together for his 76. Lukas Bigger also started a little slow, but ground out an important 77.

"Aaron Johnson, who did not play well at all on day one, redeemed himself and his 81 helped us to win by one stroke!"

Hafdal carded an 81 on day one, with Bigger posting a 78 and Johnson a 94.

Cole Haugen had rounds of 84 and 83, while Kyle Blank finished with rounds of 86 and 88.

"Cole struggled with short putts and Kyle had several bad holes, but we will be counting on them at state next week," Larson said. "Now, after a five-year absence, on to Bunker Hills next Tuesday and Wednesday. We are going down with the attitude to have some fun and see what happens. As this team gains confidence, they get stronger and I know we will do well at state."

Bunker Hills Golf Course is in Coon Rapids. The boys tee off at 7:30 a.m. both days.
