Senior guard Buck Smith was a steady presence for the Cardinal boys' basketball team this season and was rewarded for that by being named the team's most valuable player at its recent awards banquet.

Smith led the team in assists with 72 and averaged 5.5 points per game. He also shot 33 percent from three to help keep teams honest against a solid frontcourt for Alexandria.

Fellow senior Tanner Rice was named the team's Defensive MVP. Rice had 15 steals on the season and helped control teams with his quickness on the perimeter.

Rounding out the list of team award winners was sophomore John Vogeler. Vogeler came on as the season progressed and was named the team's most improved player. He was the team's second-leading scorer at 11.8 per game. At times, he proved to be a deadly three-point shooter who could score in bunches. Vogeler also rebounded well from the guard position, averaging 5.3 per game.

He and Logan Doyle are a couple players this team will rely on heavily going into next season. Doyle averaged a double-double this year as a junior with 13.2 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. He was the team's lone All-Central Lakes Conference representative, while Vogeler was named an honorable-mention selection.

They will be counted on next year as Alexandria loses seven seniors this spring. Smith, Austin Storm, Aaron Billberg, Rice, Logan Serum, AJ Anderson and Clayton Cozad all played their last game in a Cardinal uniform this winter.
