It's all systems go for a Viking Speedway car show that will take place on city property west of the Runestone Museum as part of Awake the Lakes.


At its meeting Monday night, the Alexandria City Council approved the speedway's request to have the show. It will take place Saturday, May 25 between 8 a.m. and noon.

In other action from Monday's meeting not previously reported, the council:

• Proclaimed May 17, 2013 as George Wendell Sowers Day in Alexandria. Sowers has been on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week for 35 years, keeping KXRA Radio on the air in weather conditions. He engineered special events such as the Memorial Day cemetery broadcast, the Resorters Golf Tournament and the Midnight Mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church. He designed and built all the current studios at KXRA, KX-92, and Z-99.

• Was informed that the University of Minnesota Athletics Department will bring its "Gopher Road Trip: Chalk Talk 2013" to Alexandria. It will take place on Monday, June 17 at 4:30 p.m. at the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum.

• Agreed to hire a student intern, Nick Buller, as part of an agreement with Active Living Douglas County. Active Living is providing $3,000 and the city is contributing $1,000. He will be working with the Safe Routes to School program.

• Formally established a legislative committee, which has been meeting and making recommendations for the city for the past several weeks. The committee advises the council on proposed legislation at the federal, state and county level that affects the city. It also reviews and recommends changes to the city code except for planning, zoning and subdivision recommendations, which are referred to the Alexandria Planning Commission. The committee consists of at least three members, including two city council members and the city attorney.

• Issued a charitable gambling license to the Alexandria Wrestling Booster Club, allowing it to sell pull-tabs with a dispensing device and use electronic gambling devices at Zorbaz as fundraisers.

• Issued a charitable gambling license for the Viking Sportsmen, allowing the club to sell raffle tickets for an August 14 event.

• Tabled a request from Blue Smoke BBQ, 403 3rd Avenue East, for an on-sale beer license. There were some omissions in the application.

• Tabled requests to sell fireworks submitted by TNT Fireworks and Kmart. There were omissions in the applications.

• Issued fireworks licenses to Target and Walmart.

• Issued peddlers licenses to Fabian Seafood and The Country Stop.

• Issued an excavating license to Kotzer Excavating.

• Approved the April bills on a 4-1 vote. Council member Virgil Batesole said he would be voting against any paying of bills. He said he's been informed by others that because Alexandria is a charter city, the council doesn't have the authority to pay bills unless approved through a referendum.
