Broadway update: Project is at half-way point

Alexandria's Broadway reconstruction project is about 50 percent complete.

City Engineer Tim Schoonhoven provided the following update today, Tuesday:

"We are now at the half-way point in the Broadway project.  It is quite a milestone.  We have installed 6,500 feet of water, sewer and storm sewer lines, 15,000 square feet of sidewalk, and 70,000 square feet of concrete pavement.  We  have placed more than half a mile of curb and gutter and installed almost 4 miles of electrical wiring.

"Phase one of the project is now open from Third Avenue to Fifth Avenue.  While some items remain (primarily benches and landscaping), the street is open to both pedestrians and vehicles.

"Phase two is approximately half done.  All of the underground work is complete.  The contractor will be pouring curb and gutter today and is shaping the subgrade in preparation for paving.

"Phase three is scheduled to start on Monday.  This phase goes from just south of Sixth Avenue to just south of Eighth Avenue.  The initial work will include the removal of the existing pavement.  The existing sidewalk will stay in place until after Crazy Days. "
