Broadway update: Pavement removed between Sixth and Eighth Avenue

Alexandria's Broadway reconstruction project continues to make headway. Here's the latest information from City Engineer Tim Schoonhoven as of Monday:

"The contractor began the removal of the existing pavement on phase three between Sixth Avenue and Eighth Avenue today.  By the end of the day, all of the pavement will be removed.  As was the case on the first two phases, the pavement removal is being done with a milling machine, which grinds the asphalt and conveys the millings into trucks.  All of this material is eventually recycled.

"The contractor completed the installation of the last of the phase two pavers today.  He will be sweeping and striping the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Broadway tomorrow."
