Brendon Coyer advances to state semifinals
Brendon Coyer battled his way to the semifinals of the state wrestling tournament Friday evening with a 5-4 victory over Wyatt Becker of Badger/GB-MN.
Brendon Coyer found himself trailing by a point late in the match, but he benefited from a stalling call and picked up an escape with less than 30 seconds left for the victory.
After the match, Brendon Coyer said he wants a shot at the individual 120 pound title.
“I’m going to go for the championship,” he said.
Last season, Brendon Coyer fought his way through wrestle backs to earn third place at 106 pounds. Today he cruised to a technical fall victory in his morning match before pulling out a tough win in the quarterfinals.
“The first one I felt really good, the second one I felt a little iffy,” Brendon Coyer said.
Ryan Engfer also wrestled a semifinal match for Osakis. He lost 8-0 to Tyler Keller of Medford.
Osakis head coach Joey Andreasen said he was happy with Osakis’ first day of wrestling. Both Brendon Coyer and Engfer won matches in the opening round, and Trenton Coyer was two mistakes away from advancing as well.
“Brendon and Ryan, that first round, wrestled extremely well,” Andreasen said. “Trenton just got himself in a little trouble. He was kind of controlling the match and kind of made two pretty crucial errors and gave that guy 10 of his points.”
In the semifinals, Brendon Coyer will face the top ranked Class A wrestler in the state at 120 pounds, Cameron Sykora.
“He’s nationally ranked, so obviously that’s going to be a heck of a test for Brendon,” Andreasen said. “Our goal at the start was hopefully for him to get the opportunity to wrestle Cameron. Stranger things have happened, so we’ll see.”
Both Trenton Coyer and Engfer will have the chance to advance in the wrestle back rounds. Those matches begin at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
