Although the crowd was sparse this year because of sub-zero temperatures and not much pre-publicity, the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train still generated some Christmas excitement - and support for the Douglas County Outreach Food Shelf.

It stopped at the 8th Avenue East railroad crossing by Hubbard Feed Mill in Alexandria Tuesday afternoon. More than $1,560 and 250 pounds of food were donated. From inside a modified boxcar, a band performed holiday tunes while the crowd clapped, danced and tried to stay warm. The Holiday Train tour - the largest fundraiser of its kind - will stop in more than 110 communities in Canada and the U.S. Each Holiday Train is about 1,000 feet in length with several decorated rail cars.
