The Otto Bremer Foundation awarded a grant of $25,000 to the Brandon Lions for the renovation and expansion of the Brandon city parks.

The Brandon Lions Club, in conjunction with the city of Brandon, has been laying the groundwork the past year to improve the parks in Brandon.

The current city park, Lions Park, is showing its age with the last improvements taking place in the 1990s. Along with updating the existing park, the Lions are looking to develop the park in the Deere Run Addition on the northeast side of town.

Plans for the existing park include replacing and updating out-of-date playground equipment and erecting a new picnic shelter.

In Deere Run, plans are to landscape, plant trees and add playground equipment.

"After speaking with some local daycare providers, the need for safe and updated playgrounds for children was clear," said Jim Spencer, member of the Brandon Lions.

The group set aside $36,000 of its own funds to support this project and sought funding help from outside groups.

Besides the $25,000 Otto Bremer grant, the group has received funds from Tastefully Simple and Runestone Electric Association.

"We've been fortunate to receive a substantial amount from grants to cover costs, but we also need help from individuals and businesses in the area to make this project a reality," said Tessa Dutcher of the Brandon Lions.

The Lions are hoping to break ground on the project this spring.

The Brandon Lions, a service club organization committed to serving the community, has been active for 41 years and currently has 35 members.

Along with their work with the parks, group members also host diabetes detection clinics, organize the Recycle for Sight eyeglass recycling program, support organizations that aid the blind and disabled and participate in community functions.

Donations for the park project can be sent to the Brandon Lions at PO Box 187, Brandon, MN 56315. Tax deductible contributions should be made out to the Brandon Community Foundation.
