Bees were held for 4th through 8th grades in schools throughout Minnesota to determine each school's winner. School-level winners then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. Students with the top 100 scores advanced to the state level.

The 2009 Minnesota Geographic Bee will be held on Friday, April 3 at St. Cloud State University.

The state winner will receive $100, the National Geographic Collegiate Atlas of the World and a trip to Washington, D.C., where he or she will represent Minnesota in the national finals to be held in May.

Branch is the son of Ron and Ann Branch of Alexandria.
