Boys' soccer: Section 8A playoff victory
The Alexandria boys' soccer team made easy work of East Grand Forks in the opening round of the Section 8A playoffs on Tuesday night.
The Cardinals were dominant from the get-go, controlling the pace of the game from the drop of the ball. Kirby Nelson got Alexandria on the board at the 26:09 mark when he broke free with the ball and drew out the keeper before putting a beautifully placed ball into the left corner of the net.
It did not take long at all for the Cardinals to add on. Thomas Williams had the ball near the left sideline and was battling a defender when he lofted a high shot at a perfect angle toward the net. The ball was too high for the Grand Forks' keeper to play as it floated over his head and into the top-right corner for a 2-0 lead.
Alexandria cruised from there. The Cardinals continued to control the pace of the game in the second half as Joe Wymore and Williams scored in the final 40 minutes to help secure the easy win. Scott Hennen needed to make just two saves to pick up the shutout in goal for Alexandria.
The win set up a match-up in Bemidji with the Lumberjacks. That game was to take place last night, Thursday, at 4 p.m.
