Boys soccer falls in 8A quarterfinals
The Alexandria boys’ soccer team got a win in the opening round of the Section 8A tournament last Thursday before the season came to an end for the Cardinals in a 4-1 loss to top-seeded Hillcrest-Pelican Rapids on Saturday.
The Comets got on the board in the first half of the section quarterfinals on Saturday behind two goals from Chris Pellegrino that made it a 2-0 game at the break. They wasted no time adding to their lead in the second half as Kevin Franco scored before Chris Larsen made it a 4-0 game. Alexandria’s only goal came in the 60th minute off a corner kick.
The Cardinals pulled off the first-round upset over fourth-seeded East Grand Forks in a 5-3 game. Kagan Foster got his team going early when he scored in the fourth minute off an assist from Kevin Roedel. The Green Wave answered, but Devon Crowe gave Alexandria the lead again shortly after when Foster assisted. Roedel added a goal himself a little later to give his team a 3-1 lead at the half.
The Cardinals kept piling on in the second half. Jake Nienaber scored in the 42nd minute unassisted before Crowe answered an East Grand Forks goal late in the game to put the finishing touches on the win.
Alexandria finished the season 6-10-2 overall. The Cardinals were 4-7-1 in the Central Lakes Conference to finish sixth in the league standings.
