Boys' golf team 10th at U of M Tri-State Invitational
It must finally be spring.
The Cardinal boys' golf team got their first meet under their belts this weekend as they competed in the 24-team Tri-State Invitational Friday and Saturday at the University of Minnesota's Bolstad Golf Course.
The Redbird boys battled cold, windy and rainy weather on day one, but came through with a two-day 634 for a 10th place tie.
"Given all that, especially not even having practiced on a course yet, the team played well," said Cardinal head coach Rick Larson of his squad's first time on a golf course this season.
"Of course the putting and touch around the green, which takes time to get back, was rusty, which was to be expected," he said. "The whole team battled all round long, especially when it rained.
"We have a veteran group and they showed that with their play.
"Day two saw just cold and wind - at least the rain stopped," said Larson. "Our goal was to finish in the top 10, which we did.
"All the players know we have a lot of work to do in such a weather-shortened season, but we will continue to get better."
The Cardinals were led by Gordy Diekman's 77-79-156, along with Jesse Hafdal at 77-81-158, Casey Vangsness 79-80-159 and Bennett Black 82-85-167.
Kyle McIver shot a 79 and Matt Porwoll a 91 in a single round.
