Boys golf to seventh at Tri-State tournament
The Alexandria boys' golf team proved that it can complete with some of the top teams across the state by taking seventh out of 23 teams at the Tri-State Tournament this past weekend.
Some of the best schools from Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin took part in the two-day tournament at the University of Minnesota Golf Course. Casey Vangsness took another step toward asserting himself as one of the top golfers in the area with a two-day score of 145. That was good for fourth place out of 152 golfers.
The Cardinals finished with a team score of 620, while Forest Lake won the event with a two-day score of 600. Alexandria came back strong on day two, shooting a 303, compared to 317 on day one.
Chris Sholts had a strong showing for Alexandria with a 149. He came back on day two and shot a 71 after shooting a 78 in the opening round. Sholts tied for 13th individually.
"It was a great tourney for us considering we have only been on a golf course for six days," head coach Rick Larson said. "We all now know what we need to work on as we continue to progress into this early season. The biggest point, I think, is how well the team came back on day two after their opening round 317. It was much cooler and breezy on day two and the team performed well, posting a sizzling 303, which is what this team now knows they are capable of."
