The Cardinals led by only eight points at halftime, but improved play on offense in the second half helped them pull away.

John Vogeler led Alexandria’s offense with 24 points, which included 19 in the second half. Chase Kohler added 17 points and Joe Gorghuber finished with 11.

The win helped Alexandria move to 11-8 overall this season.

ALEXANDRIA 51, BRAINERD 48 The Cardinals improved to 8-5 against Central Lakes Conference opponents with a 51-48 victory over Brainerd on the road Thursday.

With Alexandria up 51-48 and 14 seconds left, Brainerd had possession of the ball with a chance to tie the game. But Brainerd’s DJ Kraemer missed an open three-pointer and Alexandria held on for its eighth Central Lakes Conference victory this season.

“We were going to switch on everything and just make sure to take away the arc,” Alexandria head coach Forrest Witt said to Jeremy Millsop of the Brainerd Dispatch. “We knew they were going to utilize (Isaiah) Smith at some point and they did. They caught us on a switch. I think we got caught up on a UCLA screen to start that action and fortunately they missed the shot. It wasn’t great defense.

“But this is huge. We’re playing good basketball lately and just to keep that momentum going within the conference is good.”

John Vogeler led the Alexandria scoring with 17 points, 10 of which came in the second half.

The difference in the game was likely Brainerd’s poor shooting at the free-throw line. The Warriors shot 44 percent from the field and 33 percent from 3-point range, but were just 1-of-9 from the line in the first half and 6-of-15 in the second.

“We got fouled and couldn’t make free throws,” Brainerd head coach Scott Stanfield said to Millsop. “You shoot 7-of-24 from the line, you aren’t going to win and we didn’t. If we shoot 50 percent we win by five or six points.”

The Cardinals next play an away game against Sauk Rapids-Rice on Thursday.
