Boys basketball: WCA wins two Prairie games

The West Central Area boys basketball team used a 23-2 run out of the gates to put the game out of reach early at home against Royalton on Saturday.

The Knights used the game-starting run to cruise to a 67-38 win over Royalton. The game was also senior night as the Knights honored players Brady Combs, Dakotah Kashmark, Andrew Lindor, Jared Oachs and Austin Redepenning along with statistician Tyler Schill.

“We are very proud of them and were glad to honor them in front of our home crowd,” head coach Kraig Hunter said.

The Knights had four players finish in the double digits in scoring. Jay Zimmerman and Combs both led the way with 15 points each, Kashmark finished with 12 points and Austin Redepenning scored 11.

Ben Borash led Royalton with 11 points.

A 7-2 run for the Knights in the beginning of the second half helped it close out a 46-32 win over Long Prairie-Grey Eagle in Barrett on Thursday.

The Knights led 24-14 at halftime, and the 7-2 run in the second helped build a 31-16 lead that proved difficult for the Thunder to overcome. Hunter said this lead played right into the Knights’ hands on Thursday.

“Long Prairie is a team that loves to play a real slow-down style,” Hunter said. “They are very deliberate. The good thing about that for us is that if you get a lead on them, they are not a comeback team.”

The Knights also felt good about their defensive pressure after holding the Thunder to 27 percent shooting. WCA helped control the play by grabbing 31 rebounds.

“They try to have long possessions and make you fall asleep, but we managed to sustain our concentration on those long defensive possessions and we also contested shots very well tonight,” Hunter said.

Combs led the WCA scoring with 12 points.
