Boys' basketball: Osakis season ends in 6AA-North opener

The Silverstreaks had to open the Section 6AA-North boys' basketball tournament facing No. 2 seeded Melrose Thursday, and knew that the task would be a hard one.

"We knew we would have a tough game," said Osakis head coach Chris Stroup. "Melrose is a talented team.

"For the first 10-12 minutes, the guys went out and executed our game plan very well, controlling the tempo, making good decisions offensively, taking care of the ball and making them work to score.

"Then they turned up the pressure and forced us to play at a pace we couldn't maintain," Stroup added. "They were able to take the lead and stretch it out to 12 points very quickly, and from then on it drew us out of what we had to do to win."

Seniors Joe Roggenbuck and Mitch Herzog finished the game with 24 and 11 points respectively. Roggenbuck also added 15 rebounds to give him a double-double to finish his high school career. He also had one blocked shot and two three-point shots in the game.

Herzog also had a strong finish to his final season as he added three three-pointers, one assist, four rebounds and two steals.

Seniors Dean Mickle, Kyle Swenstad and Jordan Mack also contributed to the contest as Mickle had four points, two assists and seven rebounds.

Swenstad added six points, two assists, five rebounds and a steals, and Mack had five points, one assist, two rebounds and a steal.

"I was extremely proud of my players as I have been all season long," said Stroup. "They went out and gave everything they had.

"For our five seniors, it was certainly not the season they dreamt in regards to wins and losses, but hopefully, they feel that it was successful in learning and developing for the rest of their lives."
