Boys basketball: Alex handles Sauk Rapids, falls to Tech

The Alexandria boys’ basketball team split two games in as many nights on Monday and Tuesday.

The Cardinals had no problem getting past an 0-24 Sauk Rapids Rice team on Monday night as they won 79-56. They then fell 53-50 on the road at St. Cloud Tech.

The Cardinals showed they can play with the top teams in the league as the Tigers boast a 21-3 record and are on top of the Central Lakes Conference at 14-1. John Vogeler had 18 points to lead Alexandria, while Joe Gorghuber and Chase Kohler each added 10 points apiece.

But the night belonged to St. Cloud Tech’s Andy Foley. The senior guard passed current NBA guard Nate Wolters as the Tigers’ all-time leading scorer after he poured in 29 on Tuesday. That gave him 1,771 points for his career. Wolters had held the record at 1,767.

Vogeler had 31 points to lead three Alexandria players in double figures against Sauk Rapids-Rice. Kohler added 12 points. Brandon Bistodeau finished with 10 and David Krivanek had nine.

The Cardinals will wrap up the regular season with two home games this week as Willmar comes to town tonight, Friday, and Detroit Lakes comes in for a 7:30 p.m. tip on Saturday.
