The Friends of the Library, a nonprofit organization that supports the Douglas County Library in Alexandria, hosted its annual used book sale on Wednesday, August 6 and Thursday, August 7 at the National Guard Armory in Alexandria.
The sale has been held annually for about 30 years, and six years ago, it was moved to the National Guard Armory to house the growing number of books. All of the books come solely from community member donations.
The book sale committee, comprised of Priscilla Reineke, Lynne Cosmano, Georgia Wahlberg, Bev Dokken and Stu Mackechney, noted that 2014 was another successful year for the book sale.
Because of the thousands of donations received this year, the book sale was extended to a two-day sale, and it went “great,” Reineke said. Attendance was steady, with many books going to new homes.
At the event, 130 tables displayed thousands of books separated into a multitude of different categories.
Any books that were left over after the sale will be donated to area Developmental Achievement Centers to be reused or used in thrift stores.
Reineke enjoys the book sale for a number of reasons.
“First of all, to see the books be used or recycled, for the books to be used more than once,” she said. “Secondly, that we come together as a team with our organization to make this fundraiser possible.”
“And thirdly, it’s a lot of fun,” she said with a laugh.
In planning and hosting the book sale, Reineke isn’t alone. She offered a special thank you to all of the volunteers that helped.
“It’s one great big team that makes this a successful fundraiser,” she said. “Our main mission is to fundraise for the library. [The book sale] is the biggest fundraiser that we do for the library.
“It’s just considered a fun event,” she continued, “and we appreciate that we have the opportunity to provide this in Douglas County.”
The Friends of the Library accepts book donations all year round at the Douglas County Library. The Friends sort the books and either store them for the annual sale or use them for the Friends bookstore at the library.
