The Brandon-Evansville Bluedogs stayed alive in the Region 16C Tournament this past weekend by winning twice in three tries.

The Bluedogs started the regional tournament with a 13-3 victory over Wolf Lake on Saturday afternoon, setting up a second-round game against Pelican Rapids.

Pelican Rapids won that contest 10-4, sending the Bluedogs to the loser’s bracket. The Bluedogs only trailed by two runs early in the game against Pelican Rapids before the Lakers busted the game open in the sixth.

“We ran into a buzz saw against Pelican Rapids,” Bluedogs player Mike Bruns said. “It was 2-0 through five innings and (Collin) Modahl was throwing well, but the Lakers hit the ball well and after two home runs all of a sudden it was 9-0.”

The Bluedogs rebounded to defeat the Midway Snurdbirds 6-3 on Sunday afternoon thanks to a complete game performance by starting pitcher Adam Johnson. He went nine innings, allowing three earned runs on nine hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

The Bluedogs trailed 3-2 heading into the seventh inning when they scored four runs to take command of the game. Lee Nelson drove in a run on a bases loaded walk to tie the game at 3-3, and Brent Meissner singled to right to drive in Collin Modahl for a 4-3 lead. With two outs, Travis Krueger came through with a clutch two-out double to drive in the game’s final two runs.

The victory over Midway set up a Friday evening game between the Bluedogs and Resorters West rivals Urbank-Parkers Prairie. The winner of that game will face Fergus Falls for a spot in the state tournament.

Urbank-Parkers Prairie went 1-1 in the tournament after receiving a bye in the first round and losing to Fergus Falls 13-9.

The Bombers rebounded to defeat Wolf Lake 11-0 in its first loser’s bracket game.
