A slow start offensively for the Blue Anchors has contributed to its 1-5 start through the first six games of the Northwoods League schedule.

After losing the season’s first five games, Alexandria finally picked up its first win 7-4 in the second game of a double header against Thunder Bay on Sunday. The Blue Anchors also lost two games against both Mankato and Waterloo along with the one loss to Thunder Bay.

Alexandria has struggled at the plate and early on was ranked towards the bottom in most offensive categories. The Blue Anchors were last among Northwoods League teams this season with 16 runs scored through six games, and only two teams have fewer hits than their 43. Alexandria was also last in the league with three doubles, one home run and 10 walks so far this season.

At the home opener on Tuesday, May 27, manager Al Newman said the Blue Anchors were still waiting for a few position players to finish their college seasons before starting in the Northwoods League. He said the arrival of these players should strengthen the team’s offense.

“We still have four or five guys that are going to be in our starting lineup that are not here,” Newman said.

Kris Goodman has only played in two games for the Blue Anchors but already has the only home run of the season and is tied with Jason Shaul for the team lead in RBIs with three.

Ricky Sanchez has two doubles so far and is tied for the team lead in runs scored with three.

Lucas Herd has also scored three runs this season and has picked up the only win on the mound for the Blue Anchors in a start Sunday against Thunder Bay. He allowed only two earned runs to the Border Cats in five innings.

The Blue Anchors will play two home games this week at Knute Nelson Ballpark, on Thursday evening against the St. Cloud Rox and on Saturday night against the Willmar Stingers.
