Twenty-seven students participated in the bee. Both DMS students were in the top nine students to make it into round four, and Bittmann was one of only three students to advance to round seven.

He was eliminated in round 10, which earned him 3rd place and a spot in the state spelling bee.

The 1st and 2nd place finishers were determined in round 14. Coleman Cody from Osakis placed 2nd, and Mia Martinez of Detroit Lakes was crowned champion after correctly spelling her final word - precipitate.

The top five finishers advance to the Multi-Regional State Spelling Bee in Fergus Falls on March 1.

One speller from the state event will win an all-expense-paid trip to the National Bee in Washington, D.C.
