Bethany Hasz 13th at Nike Nationals
Alexandria’s Bethany and Megan Hasz took aim at some of the top high school runners in the nation at the Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Oregon this past Saturday.
Bethany continued to post impressive times after securing a state title this past fall. She finished 13th at the Nike Nationals with a time of 17:54 on the 5K course. Megan was 53rd at the event, finishing in 18:29.7.
“Bethany had a great race in a field of the top high school runners from around the nation,” former Alexandria cross country coach Mark Nelsen said. “She consistently moved up after the first 1K and challenged every runner on an unusually cold and blustery day in Portland. Megan ran with Bethany through the mile but struggled with her breathing and maintaining the fast early pace. Both these girls have had a tremendous fall cross country season.”
Runners qualify for the Nike Nationals by racing in regional events. The Hasz sisters qualified at the Heartland event, which is comprised of runners from Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
The winner of the Nike Nationals came out of the Northwest Region as Alexa Efraimson finished in a time of 16:50.1. Elise Cranny of the Southwest finished in 16:53.8 to take second, while Sarah Baxter was the third runner to finish in less than 17 minutes. She rounded out the top three in 16:57.8.
