According to Robert Henneman of Evansville, farming teaches responsibility, work ethic and other many important life lessons.

Robert and his wife, Jeanine, currently own and farm 281 acres in Evansville Township.

Sixty of those acres have been in the Henneman family since 1913.

After moving from Presholt, South Dakota in 1913, Robert’s grandparents, Otto and Hulda Henneman, purchased 160 acres in Evansville from Farmers National Bank of Alexandria. The land was $60 per acre.

In 1944 the farm was passed down to their son, Arthur, and his wife, Amy.

Next, Robert’s brother Donald and wife Sharon owned the land for 31 years.

Finally in 2003, Robert and his wife, Jeanine became the owners of the remaining 60 acres.

The Henneman Family Farm was originally a dairy farm with grain crops; now Robert Henneman farms a corn and soybean rotation.

Living on a farm that has been in the same family for more than 100 years makes the Hennemans extremely proud.

“We enjoy the way of life, working the land, seeing things grow and working with family,” Robert stated about living on a farm.

He also said that a farm is the best place to raise a family.

“[The kids] learned responsibility, planning and thinking ahead, and then of course, they learn to live without money and how to work hard. They also get an all-around education.”
