Berberich back as Osakis downs Wheaton
The Osakis Legion baseball team is getting healthy and that could mean bad things for a lot of its opponents.
Lane Berberich was back from a shoulder injury that he reinjured in the high school section playoffs as he helped Osakis to a 12-2 win over Wheaton in five innings on Monday.
Berberich started on the mound and went all five frames for the win. He allowed the two runs on four hits and a walk, while striking out six. Osakis (6-0) was still without a couple regulars, but guys continued to step up to help the team stay unbeaten this summer.
“Once again the guys played well with some players absent tonight,” coach Shad Schmidt said. “Lane made his debut in Legion this summer after his injury from high school play and pitched well. Drew [Fearing] and Brandon [Giesler] were gone but our guys stepped up and played well. It will be nice if we can get a full team at a game once as it will give us some options at different spots and give us a deeper batting lineup.”
Jordan Frederick, Brady Berberich and Ky Zimmel each had two hits to lead the offense. Zimmel had three runs, an RBI and three stolen bases. Frederick doubled, had two runs and three RBIs and Berberich scored twice and drove in two.
“Despite all the injuries and guys missing games at times, we keep finding ways to win games,” Schmidt said. “Our offense has been relentless this summer so far.”
Osakis will now put its unbeaten record on the line against some bigger cities at the Alexandria Fourth of July Tournament this weekend. They open up with a noon game on Friday against Worthington. Osakis will then take on Glenwood-Lowry at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and against Oakdale at noon.
