Bench players give B-E volleyball spark

In a close match against Hillcrest, the Brandon-Evansville volleyball team found a spark from their bench and used it for a four-set victory on Tuesday.

The Chargers decided to sub in some of their bench players after they made mistakes and lost the second set.

“On our side of the net we had to go into our bench to find a spark,” head coach Kelly Olson said. “After a loss in set two we saw the score go back and forth with no one taking the lead. We had some breakdowns and decided to give some other players a go at it.”

The Chargers played underclassmen Kylee Hanson, MaKayla Schiele, Elizabeth Friedrich and Katie Kokett, and they helped win the third set.

“Some of them have not seen the varsity court in their careers, so I know they were nervous, but they played well, were aggressive, and shined when they had the chance,” Olson said.

After watching the underclassmen play, Olson hopes the Chargers’ starters will play with more energy in their upcoming matches.

“Our normal starters seemed to be in a haze tonight,” Olson said. “I don’t know what it was but I am sure glad our bench stepped up.”

Caroline Jansen led the Chargers with 16 kills, and Kinsley Randt led the team with 37 assists.

The Chargers pounded out 13 aces against Hillcrest, with Mariah Hansen picking up four. Megan Kokett led the defense with 11 digs.
