BEMIDJI - A Bemidji man was charged Wednesday in connection with what authorities called a dangerous high-speed chase through north-central Minnesota on Monday.

Dakota Kalob Medicine, 18, was charged in Beltrami County District Court with felony third-degree burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, check forgery and fleeing police in a motor vehicle. All four charges are felonies. He also was charged with felony theft in connection to another incident.

Bail was set at $150,000 with conditions or $100,000 with conditions. He remained in Beltrami County Jail as of Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities say that Medicine stole a pickup from a local auto dealer during the holiday weekend, in addition to taking cash and checks. After discovering him at a local gas station on Monday, authorities gave chase and Medicine led them on a long pursuit that traveled north of town, through the Red Lake Indian Reservation and through Kelliher, Minn.

Medicine eventually drove the pickup into a ditch and attempted to flee on foot, but was apprehended.

Over the weekend, Medicine is accused of illegally using the auto dealer's checks in Grand Forks, N.D., including a $3,511.33 purchase at a jewelry store for several men's rings. The total of the unauthorized checks was $3,832.46.
