Be the difference in a child’s life

To the editor:

In 2009, there were more than 26,000 reports of child abuse and neglect in Minnesota, according to the Children’s Defense Fund. Of these, 21 died of maltreatment and almost 45 of these had life-threatening injuries.

This can change. Because teachers, friends and social workers told authorities about what was happening, they were able to get these children out of the abusive situations. These people were going beyond their jobs to ensure that these children have the same opportunities as every other child. They became the hope for these children.

Being a mandated reporter is not a job for only teachers, law enforcement and social workers. It is every person’s job to report when children are being abused or neglected. They are our future. Offering them the chance to learn in a safe environment and live in a safe home is what every child needs to succeed. Knowing there are people who care will give them the confidence to move forward in their lives and reach for their dreams.
