Baseball: Miltona ends successful season
Cody Curry's two hits weren't enough to punch Miltona's ticket to the State Amateur baseball tournament as the Tigers fell to the Bertha Blazers 9-0 Saturday in the Region 14C playoffs.
Bertha allowed the Tigers just one rally attempt in the game, that in the third inning.
With one out and runners on first and second, Kevin Engebretson beat out a bunt to load the bases. Engebretson was called out, however, for a baseline infraction and the runners had to return to their original bases.
A broken bat infield grounder ended the threat.
Chris Koep took the loss for the Tigers, striking out nine in his five innings of work, but the defense struggled to make plays, allowing the Blazers to score nine times.
This was Miltona's first Resorters East championship in 20 years as the Tigers ended their season with a 14-6 record and a 5-2 playoff record.
Koep led Tiger pitchers with an 8-2 record. He struck out 114 batters in 93 innings of work.
