Balance carries Charger girls

The Brandon-Evansville girls never let Hillcrest Lutheran Academy believe it had a chance on Tuesday night as the Chargers ran past the Comets 55-33.

Brandon-Evansville led 13-3 and turned it into a 27-12 lead by the break. The Chargers used three players in double figures to keep extending that lead. Emma Friedrich was the catalyst with 15 points and nine rebounds. Elizabeth Vinson added 15 points, while Kristine Betterman had 10.

“We had balanced scoring and we shot fairly well,” head coach Dick Simpson said. “We played well and we can play better.”

The Chargers outrebounded Hillcrest 33-18 on the night. Melissa Haseman had seven of those and Betterman added five boards to her 10 points. Mariah Hansen led the defensive effort with four steals, while Megan Kokett had seven points and four assists.

The win moved Brandon-Evansville to 2-1 on the young season after a loss in the opener. The Chargers have the rest of the week off before playing three games next week. They will welcome in Lake Park-Audubon on Monday and Hancock on Tuesday before going to Underwood next Thursday.
