Bakkes win 'Minnesota Nice' title from winery
Carlos Creek Winery in Alexandria recently had a Facebook contest for choosing a "Minnesota Nice Hero."
Out of four contestants, a local couple, Allen and DiAnn Bakke - nominated by Macaille Mahoney Hafner - were selected the winners by Carlos Creek Winery Facebook fans and staff.
The contest was put on by Carlos Creek Winery to promote their new "Minnesota Nice" wine club, which provides quarterly shipments of Carlos Creek Winery wine to those who sign up for the club.
Carlos Creek Winery Facebook fans were asked to nominate someone in their life that exuded what it meant to be "Minnesota Nice." The winery then chose the top four stories of nominations and had a vote from Facebook fans and winery staff.
More than 280 votes were cast and more than 100 of those votes were for the Bakkes. Here's an excerpt from Mahoney Haffner's nomination:
"I am nominating Allen and DiAnn Bakke. DiAnn, a polio survivor who has used crutches since age 5, works from home. Allen is retired from 20-plus years on the Alexandria Fire Department and 40-plus years for the city of Alexandria. He now helps with DiAnn's answering service. Because they are home with the phones, they've helped take care of two sisters-in-law and Allen's mother, who all experienced poor health. They did everything possible to keep everyone in a house environment and out of a 'home' as long as possible. Every night they are known to make meals for anyone that stops by...They never ask anything in return."
The Bakkes won a case of Carlos Creek Winery's Minnesota Nice wines (Hot Dish Red, Wobegon White and You Betcha Blush). Mahoney Haffner also has won a bottle of each of the Minnesota Nice wines.
