B-E baseball team battles to the end
The Brandon-Evansville baseball team saw its season end after a late rally came up just short in a 3-2 loss to Nevis in the 6A tournament on Tuesday.
Nevis scored all three of its runs in the first three innings to take an early 3-0 lead. Tom Bosek settled in from there and posted zeroes to keep Brandon-Evansville within striking distance. He finished by going six innings, scattering five hits and a walk and striking out seven.
The Chargers got both their runs in the fifth inning. Christian McGaffey walked to lead things off before Bosek hit a double down the right field line. Kevin Roers then singled them both in to make it 3-2.
That’s as close as the Chargers could get as Nevis’ Austin Becker worked around five hits and five walks to secure the win on the mound in six innings of work.
“Both teams today were very evenly matched,” Brandon-Evansville head coach Brian Perleberg said. “We knew coming into the game that it was going to be a tight battle and it surely was. We fell behind early, but kept our composure and were able to put ourselves in position to tie the game, but we left at least one runner on base in each of the seven innings.”
That ultimately proved to be the difference in a close game.
“If we could have gotten one timely hit to score any of the nine runners that were left on base, maybe the outcome would have favored us,” Perleberg said. “Give credit to Nevis as they found ways to get out of those innings, and their defense played well behind their pitcher all game long.”
The Chargers had a young team this season with only one senior in Cody Lund. They showed the kind of potential they have for the future by going 14-9 and winning a share of the Pheasant Conference title.
“Cody had a nice senior year at the plate and pitched well in all of his outings on the mound,” Perleberg said of his only senior. “I wish him the best in his future baseball endeavors.”
