Author Gabe Pipo of Garfield will be at Brandon Summerfest signing his book Legends of the Hills on Saturday, August 2 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Brandon History Center.

Legends of the Hills tells the early history of Moe Township in Douglas County through the story of Johan Piippo, Pipo’s great-grandfather.

The narrative follows his journey to America, how he and his neighbors survived and how they lived.

“I used [Johan Piippo] as the subject for this book because I have the most information on his travels,” Pipo wrote in the book’s forward. “I felt that doing just a history of the township and not illustrating what the pioneers went through would not stress the true meaning of history.”

The book also shows how the township was formed, including civic organizations, churches, schools and local government accomplishments.

“It is very important to record what [the ancestors] did, and it is very important that we make our contributions of stewardship to future generations,” Pipo wrote in the preface.
