The Ashby Arrows volleyball team hopes to finish with a winning record this year after the last few seasons yielded disappointing results.

The Arrows finished 6-22-1 last season, which included a 2-10 record in the Little Eight Conference. But a high number of returning players gives the team hope for improvement.

"We have had a rough last couple years, but watching the girls play in our summer league together makes me feel optimistic," head coach Andrea Knick said. "They worked well together, had fun, and I think really connected as a team. We are hoping to continue with that as the season gets under way."

The team will be led by captains Amber Sundal, a senior this year, and junior Cassandra Jordan. Knick said she expects junior Haley Krupke to show improvements in her hitting and serving this year, and she also expects junior Abbie Ras to fight for playing time.

"We have a lot of returning girls fighting for floor time, which I feel is a great problem to have," Knick said.

Among the team's strengths coming into the season is serving and back row play. The Arrows' coaching will be working with the team on improving their offensive net play.

There has been a big change for the team's coaching this year, as 26-year head coach Brenda Johnson entered retirement in the past off-season. Knick is taking over as the new coach and will have Lauren Risbrudt as an assistant.

"I am very excited to be the head coach this year. I have a great group of girls to work with and I feel we will be able to be competitive in our conference," Knick said. "I am also so happy to have Lauren Risbrudt to assist me this year. She knows our program, and connects with our girls well already."

Knick said Underwood and Brandon-Evansville are teams to watch out for in the conference this season.
