Arlene Gillies, 91

Arlene June (Johnson Scott) Gillies, 91, was called home on Saturday, February 1, 2014.

Born June 19, 1922 to Sidney and Clarenza (Foslien) Johnson in Moe Township, Douglas County, Arlene was followed by siblings Frances, then Curtis. Harriet (Olson) Larson joined the family following Clarenzas and Bill Olsons marriage, who are from the Alexandria/Garfield area.

Many remember Arlene as a bingo caller at Our Lady of the Lake (OLOL) in Ashland, Wisconsin for nearly 30 years. Her other volunteering included but was not limited to the 1963 Easter Seals State Campaign, president and treasurer of St. Agnes Alter and Rosary Society, assistant to Fr. Conan at masses, lunch aide at OLOL, and chauffeuring for church and area events. Volunteering was a way of life for her.

Arlene retired from Northland College in 1987 after 21 years. Avon then became her new pursuit, along with her traveling passion that included two tours to Greece and 64 bus trips.

Arlene is survived by two aunts, Fyllis Flanery of Minneapolis and Louella Myhr of the Alexandria area; her five children, Jim (Linda) Scott of Ashland, Wisconsin; Cheryl (Eugene) Brinker of Iron River, Wisconsin; Melissa Gundlach of Madison, Wisconsin; Bill Gillies (Relene Stone) of Sauk Centre; Mary (Dean) Westlund of Ashland; 18 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at OLOL Church, Lake Shore Drive, on Wednesday, February 5, from 12 to 2 p.m., followed by her funeral mass at 2 p.m. Luncheon will follow in the church hall. Mountain Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
