The Alexandria Area Special Olympics gymnastics team hosted the Area 4 meet at the Lakes Area gymnastics facility on May 3 with plenty of local athletes bringing home first-place finishes.

A total of 20 athletes from the Alexandria area and Perham competed in artistic and rhythmic events at the meet. Alex Eggert and Ty Burg won top finishes in the men’s vault in the artistic category.

Amanda Nelson and Crystal Krohnfeldt did the same on the women’s vault and the uneven bars. Austin Burg won the men’s high bar, rings and floor exercises. Nelson, Krohnfeldt and Nicole Anderson shared first place on the women’s floor exercise.

Nelson, Anderson and Hannah Poshek shared the women’s all-around title in the artistic category. Poshek was second on the beam, floor and bar routines and first on the vault.

In the rhythmic category, Pam Thull took first place on the ball. Sarah Abbott was first in the rope/clubs and Abbott and Brianna Maiers shared first in the ribbon competition.

Coaches on the area team include Karyn Sportel, Deb Braud, Angie Anderson, Lyndsey Timm and athletes as coaches Allyson Estes and Billy Scheffler.

Athletes of all ages can compete on Alexandria Area SO teams and they do so by competing at their own age and skill level.

The next seasons for SO sports in the area include golf and bocce for the summer season. Golf will kick off on June 3 at 3 p.m. at Nordic Trails. June 10 is split between the Nordic Trails and Miltona golf courses from 3-4:30 p.m.

Bocce will begin on June 5 from 3-4:30 p.m. at the YMCA.

Those interested in volunteering with the area Special Olympics or in playing on the golf team should contact Karyn Sportel at (320) 491-8759. Those interested in having an athlete participate in bocce should call Angie Anderson at (320) 219-8081.
