Several local artists will be hosting an Autumn Art Sale and Charity Benefit.

The sale and benefit will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 10 at the Lakes Area Community Center in Battle Lake.

The purpose of the event, according to organizer Stephen Henning, an artist from Evansville, is to raise awareness for and generate donations to the Alliance Food Shelf.

"It's been a tough year for a lot of people and this winter could be really bad," said Henning, a nationally recognized landscape painter.

The Rev. Mark Hume, pastor of Battle Lake Alliance Church, which runs the Food Shelf, said, "We have seen more people using the food shelf this summer than all last winter. We think there will be an even bigger demand for assistance this winter.

The reason, suggested Hume, is because of the economic downturn and job layoffs.

The public is invited and encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to the Autumn Art Sale, which will allow them to receive a 30 percent discount on anything on display, noted Henning.

Cash donations for the food shelf will also be accepted.

Guests of the event will see a wide range of art work, including original paintings, prints, pottery, wood carvings, rosemaling, beaded jewelry, batik, greeting cards and other handcrafted items.

Participating artists are Lou Miller, Ila Osman, Jon Hartman, Clarice Dieter, John Mehl, Scott Kiemle, Roxann Sorenson, Winnie Collins, Pauline Stonehouse and Stephen, Jackie and Leah Henning.
